Nagercoil is the capital of Kanyakumari District in Tamil Nadu and was part of Kerala until 1956. The district is speckled with mountains, rivers, valleys, hills and also places of cultural and historical importance. Located in the Ramanathapuram District of Tamil Nadu, Rameswaram is considered sacred because Hindu Mythology holds the belief that King Sri Rama set foot on this land after defeating Ravana and performed pooja to Lord Shiva. Rameswaram is ideally perched on the Pamban island and connected to the mainland by Pamban channel. Situated on the banks of River Vaigai is the 2,500 year old temple city of Madurai. Madurai was the administrative capital of Pandya kings and the temples here are renowned for the Dravidian architecture. History of Madurai dates back to 3rd Century BC.
Day 01/ Kanyakumari
Meet and greet at Trivandrum airport and proceed to Nagercoil or meet and greet at Nagercoil railway station and proceed to the hotel. Then off to the Thanumalayan Temple in Suchindram, an architectural spectacle erected in the sixteenth century with its huge seven storied pyramidal gopurams. The temple also has the famous seven pillars which emit sounds of different musical instruments when struck. The temple also boasts one of the tallest statues in India which stands at 22 feet and carved out of a single granite block. Now proceed to Kanyakumari and visit the 6th century Vattakottai Fort, Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Gandhi Mandapam. Get mesmerized by the enchanting sunset at Kanyakumari. Return to the hotel in Nagercoil.
Day 02/ Nagercoil
Day 02 / Nagercoil Start from Nagercoil and first stop is at the Padmanabhapuram Palace, nestled at the foot hills of Veli mountains, a part of Western Ghats. The palace is built in Kerala style architecture and boasts unique mural paintings, which decorate the central hall. Therafter, proceed to Mathur hanging trough, the highest and longest in South Asia built over Pahrali River. From the Aqueduct, one can see a limitless terrain of greenery with Western Ghats in the background and river Pahreli flowing below. Next stop is the astounding Pechiparai dam built over the Kodayar river and surrounded by the hills of the Western Ghats. Our next stop is the world famous Jain temple, located in the hillocks of Thirucharanam and situated on the banks of Thamraparni River. Back to Nagercoil and over night stay at the hotel.
Day 03/ Rameswaram
Morning check out and leave for Rameswaram which is around 7hrs drive from Nagercoil. Reach hotel, refresh and set out to see the fascinating Rameswaram. First stop is the Ramanathaswamy temple, which is world famous for its gargantuan and beautifully sculptured pillars. The corridor of the temple is considered the longest in the world. The temple enthralls any visitor interested in art and architecture. N Back to hotel and overnight stay there.
Day 04/ Rameswaram
First stop of the day is the Olaikuda beach, famous for its peaceful surroundings and calm sea. The place is a favourite haunt of migratory birds during winter. The entrancing coral reefs are a delightful sight and those interested in a bit of adventure can bathe and do scuba diving. If interested, can visit the fish export centers of Rameswaram, famous for its dry fish. Now proceed to Dhanushkodi, named after Rama’s bow at a distance of 8 kms from Rameswaram. The famous Rama’s bridge believed to have been built by Hanuman and his army to reach Sri Lanka is located here. Also visit Thirupallani temple connected with Rama’s visit to Srilanka. Back to hotel and overnight stay there.
Day 05/ Madurai
After breakfast, proceed to Madurai which is a 3hr drive from Rameswaram. First stop is the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple, which was the top contender for one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The temple is renowned for its breath taking 33,000 sculptures and 14 lofty, splendid and colossal towers, ideally situated at the heart of Madurai. The temple complex is the largest in the state of Tamil Nadu, spread on a whopping 45 acres! Next stop is Mariamman Teppakkulam, with an island at the center, built around 1500AD. Next stop is the famous cave temple of Thiruparankundram, which is considered as one of the six holy abodes of Lord Murugan. The temple is famous for the rock cut shrines dating back to 8th Century. The deities carved on the rocks are simply mesmerizing and talk aloud the rich culture and heritage of the place. Back to Madurai Airport or railway station.
